the greens of May

I was scrolling back through Lightroom earlier, realising all the many walks from this year that I’ve either edited and meant to share here but didn't, or that I haven’t got round to editing. And May was a bumper month for walks. Spring is always my favourite time to be outdoors: still cool enough to be enjoyable (you know that I don’t like heat) and relatively light on flies (and bites), but with the benefit of longer days and with the landscape bursting into life after winter. April was a great month as well, and I have several walks still to share, but one thing at the time. Thank goodness I didn’t set up this blog with the intention of a linear timeline when posting – clearly, that’s not my style!
So let’s head back to this walk in the middle of May, by which point the landscape was blanketed in fresh, vibrant greens. When editing photos, I always want spring greens to feel a little warmer in photos and a little less zesty, so these are edited accordingly, but still feel vibrant compared to the landscape now, six months later.
Looking back at these photos and spotting the early ferns as we walked through the woodland, and then the first rhododendron blooms as we headed along the path that leads to St Baldred’s Cradle, and then, once on the headland, the flourish of sea thrift across the rocks, I can remember how good it felt to be walking here, knowing that the days were stretching longer, and that we had a whole summer of evening walks ahead of us.
